This is what I tried. I found the brake light switch above the pedal, and I was going to detach the wires to it first, but there was another block above it with two black connectors, I pulled one of those and the rear tail lights (all four bulbs) went out. Turned on and tested everything, everything works . . . rear lights (2 outside bulbs), hazard, backup, stop, turn signals, markers. The rear (red) lights in the middle don't come on now . . . except when I push the brake pedal.
So, what exactly did I pull? What other functions are on that block of switches/connections in the pedal area? Anything to do with the engine, shifting, etc?
Here is a picture of the connectors I'm talking about:

Would leaving the connector (for cruise control) unplugged cause any difficulties?

Oh, and yes it is an automatic.

In the picture, with the one connector unplugged, the engine kind of races a bit more and either stalls when I put it into gear or "lurches" into gear. So I re-plugged it and that problem went away. However, the taillights all come back on and stay on when the car is off and key is out (all four bulbs across the back, with that one connector unplugged only the outside two bulbs (tail lights) came on and the inside two bulbs went off -- and everything else works fine.
I tried to disconnect the other wire (to the cruise solinoid), but I can't get it out. I think a tab needs to be depressed and I can get a hold of it and pull at the same time . . . is there a puller for this?
Should I pull the fuse for the radio feed/cruise and see if that does anything?
Anything else that might be keeping all four bulbs of the taillights on?
