Idea for a custom dash pouch replacement... (Page 1/1)
Phosphor_Burn AUG 07, 09:30 PM
The Fiero I recently bought is missing its dash pouch. The dealer cut a piece of plastic material to fit into the indentation to cover the holes, but obviously I'd like to put something there for a little bit of storage space. I considered trying to obtain a factory-style dash pouch (or have one made), and I considered buying one of the aftermarket glove boxes that are out there, but I have a different idea. Hopefully I can describe it adequately, and maybe someone can point me in the direction of some clever crafters who can do this kind of work (or tell me why it's a dumb idea).

The concept is a rigid, flat compartment that fits into the indentation and is basically flush with the dash when closed. So the "box" would be roughly 13" wide by 6" tall by 1.5" deep, and open on the top-- just big enough to hold some important paperwork and a CD or two. Alternatively, it could have M-fold sides so it's easier to get your hand in there.

The way I picture it, it would be hinged at the bottom and have one of those push-click latch systems (push to release and open, push again to close and latch). My interior is all done in Mr. Mike's leather, and I have all the invoices for it so I know the color codes. It would be great if this fancy new "glove box" could have a leather front that matched the color (and Pegasus shield embroidery) of my door map pockets. So I imagine I'd contact Mr. Mike's about the leather part, but what about the rest of this gizmo?

I don't know anything about how to fabricate such a thing, but it doesn't seem like it would be too crazy to try and create a unit that could be mounted in that space with the existing screw holes.

What do you all think? Thanks for reading.

The Fiero dash is not very strong. Whatever you do keep the added box or pouch light in weight. There are a few boat gloveboxes that can fit that area but all would need modification to fit. If you advertise in the Mall section I'm sure that you can find a decent condition origianal pouch.

Yeah, I was kind of looking at this...... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ma...-Holder/323664533491
Idea would be to reduce the overall projection by probably using a small grinder to make the cut then plastic weld it back together. Looking at the plastic I would think it is not too heavy. You'd just have to watch about the size of drinks you put in the cupholder. Probably be just one cup put in at a time anyway,,,,,

Thanks for the replies!

Good to know about the dash not being very strong. I was picturing that the frame/hinge/lid assembly would probably be made from plastic, possibly 3D-printed components, so the whole thing could be kept pretty lightweight I think. I'm not interested in cup holders, mainly because my interior is so nice that I'm not allowing any food or drinks in the car anyway!

The whole idea is a storage compartment just big enough for some documents, that looks really slick with a leather front flush against the existing dash.

That box comes with and without cup holders. It can be made to fit but the depth needs to be condensed to about 3". This can be done by cutting out a section with a Dremel wheel and then joining the cut sections with plastic weld epoxy.
