Replacing the Carpet (Page 1/1)

In my view, the carpets in Fieros with their gray specked pattern look outdated. It was time to replace the carpet in my 85GT so I purchased a molded carpet. Removed both seats, took off the front side panel/moldings along the door frame, the firewall panel, removed the console and rear column panel. Pulled out the carpet and the jute padding. Cut and glued in new jute sections, leaving the seat mounting frame reinforcement open and cut sections for the firewall panel mounting tabs. Now its time to install the new molded carpet.. Did a rough fit and its a bit oversize so I will start at the center console and work my way around using spray on adhesive for a better fit, (and hopefully cutting just right) .
Any tips out there for getting the best installation?
BTW, we have another Fiero carpet job ahead. Mr Mike recommends installing the new carpet over the old one. Anyone try this. Results, ease of installtion?

I bought rolls of black carpet an glued it to the old carpet.
I’ve done this on 2 cars. The current one has had it for almost 10 years(early ‘10)

I just brushed the carpet and vacuumed. The used 3M 90 spray adhesive.
I just slowly sprayed glue and pressed on the carpet. Trimmed as I went.
The hard area was behind the seats.
I used the same carpet on the doors.

I’ll be doing it again on another one of my cars. Last time I got carpet from Walmart. But they don’t have it anymore.
I liked the carpet with no backing. My most recent order ended up looking more like felt than carpet.

Overall it cost me 1 or 2 cans of spray adhesive. $13 ea. I used to always have it around.
Carpet was cheap, maybe $25-30.

Black carpet looks great with stock gray interior and gray leather seats.

I’ll do a thread when I do it again. Probably one of the easiest cheap make overs for a Fiero.

The more I think about this, bulk carpet rolls can be made to fit a Fiero. The only real fitting is in the rear inner corners but a cut can be made there.. I bought "molded carpet" that wasn't exactly molded to fit properly so the fitting has been a big job. I just take my time cut fit and glue to the jute that I installed previously and and glued underneath. I find that gluing with the spray adhesive does greatly help the fit and the finished look. The next carpet job will try going over the old carpet as Mr Mike recommends.
