88 GT Oil change Question (Page 1/1)

I’m bringing in my 88 Fiero GT for its first oil change as it’s owner and just wanted some feedback. I’m going with a Mobil 1 M1-201A oil filter, 5 quarts of Valvoline full synthetic 5W30 high mileage. I live in FL and the Fiero has 80K miles. Does this all sound good to go? I believe the usual method is use 4 quarts and check for the 5th? Appreciate any feedback thanks.

There are lots of acceptable oils and filters. The big variable is how often you change these things, and if you own a Fiero in 2019, chances are pretty good you will be keeping up on your maintenance because you care about the car. Original owners often were not so kind (apologies to the few crazies on this forum who bought their cars new).

You should look at the oil on the dipstick before taking it in to form an opinion of what the prior owner was doing: is it dark and sludgy? any signs of water? You can also take off the breather and look inside at the rocker arms and surrounding area to gauge the cleanliness. Usually when getting a used car I will warm it up to operating temp then change the oil and filter, then after a few hundreds miles change it again for good measure.

My manuals state 4 quarts in the 2.8 with or without filter. You didn't say what engine. Be careful, too much oil can be harmful...

The official oil capacity is 4 quarts. But if you use the larger oil filter, it'll be closer to 4.5 quarts. I think it would be wise to put in 4 quarts, and go from there.

The car is in great shape and the oil in it now looks normal, just needs to be changed. Yes it’s the 2.8 L V6 totally forgot to mention that! Really just wanted to know if anyone has run the above Mobil 1 filter and oil without any issues. Sounds like I’ll be going with the “put 4 and add more” method in regard to oil capacity.
