Lately my 88 Formula has been difficult to start when cold. It cranks for a long time and the only way I've found to get it to fire is to push down the gas pedal. When is does start it smokes for a little then clears out. Once running it is smooth and no hesitation. It starts fine when it's warm. I did a quick search but nothing immediately come up in a search result. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like possibly the fuel injectors and/or the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm are leaking. A fuel pressure test would help sort things out.

On the fuel rail just before the fuel pressure regulator.

The problem I was having turned out to be a bad distributor. The shaft was almost seized up, it turned but very hard. I think it caused the distributor to rotate a little and get out of timing, causing the hard starting.
