Both headlights go up but passenger side won't go down? (85) (Page 1/1)

When I have the hood up I can see that the knob on the motor doesn't drop a little and spin like the driver side one. Any ideas?

Check the "Ogres Cave" ... listed at the very top of the page. Click on that link and then under The Ogres Fiero Cave roll your cursor over Electrical. Then roll the cursor over Lighting and click on Gen 1 HL Motor. He does a good job of explaining the system and potential problems.

I am having the same issue on my 85GT right now but it will go down when I crank it by hand. I'll just rebuild the motor and be done with it. Owners of the 87-88's are able to buy new motors but us folks with early Fieros having the Gen 1 motors are S.O.L.

No we're not. I'm still regularly rebuilding Generation 1 motors. I have more than a dozen on hand that are available for rebuild.

UPDATE: I switched the driver side and passenger side relays but nothing changed so the problem must be with the motor itself. I took it apart but nothing looks damaged or worn. Could anyone tell me what to look for inside the motor?

Much of the time the rubber bumpers inside the gear deteriorate and the gear then spins freely without engaging the lift arm shaft. Forgot about fierofool who fixes these motors regularly. If your are unable to repair it, ask for a quote and send it to him. He's received good reviews.

I just fixed the exact same problem today. Passenger side wouldn't go down. It turned out be a limit switch issue. Luckily I had a spare. Check to see if you have power on the blue wire at the HL motor with the headlight switch in the off position. If you have power, may be the limit switch, easy to swap out once the HL assy is removed.

Jim, you said you took the motor apart, and it looked good. Do you mean you have drilled the rivets out, or was it bolted together. If bolted together it has at some point been rebuilt. They are riveted together from the factory, new kits come with replacement nuts & bolts . Either way, I would rebuild both motors for a fail-safe, and be done with it, they are prone to failure. I have used RD's kits with the new metal gears with great results, as many here have. Rodney also makes a real good replacement isolation relay if you determine that's a problem. Color coded wires, real easy to install.

If you decide to rebuild the motors, it's not that hard once you have them on the bench. they come with new bump stops...Here's a tip to remember when putting the motors back together: Make sure the D shaped upper seal is within the motor housing, not outside under the knob, it's easy to miss that...Don't ask me how I know this...
