3800SC/4T65E SHAKE BETWEEN 40-65 MPH ! (Page 1/2)

86 NOTCHIE, car runs great shifts good, but picks up a Shake in the back between 40-60 mph. GOES AWAY above 60-65. urethane cradle bushings. changed wheels and tires twice, aligned twice. > NOT my car,( diagnosis over the phone). It's gotta be something "spinning", right ? a tie rod should have shown up with alignment, correct ? Axle? what else? thanks for ideas

Sounds like a tire out of balance condition. I had this happen a few years back in the 50-75 mph range and re-balancing didn't help. Finally replaced the wheels and the tires and all was OK BUT you said that they were changed. Check the CV axles for play and the wheel bearing hubs.

Try to find out if the vibration changes when accelerating, coasting. A worn inner tripot axle joint will do that. And if that is the case. Need to check for bad motor mount. A bad inner/tripot cv joint will be more pronounced under acceleration.

he's bring it in on monday, I'll find out then. thanks

turns out the shake is Not in the rear, it is front wheel bearings and lower ball joints ! AND the garage told him they "Aligned the car" ($100), funny how they did that with "wobbling wheels", and Never Touched a ball joint "nut"(on top) OR a "nut" on the Tie Rods ! (original grease and rust). Gotta WATCH these so called mechanics ! LOL

OK the shake IS IN THE REAR, it is Positively absolutely the AXLE. it is TOO LONG,(give the man a cigar who said that !) there is NO PLAY whatsoever in the pass side axle (IN & Out) there is about 1/16-1/8 on the driver side. I checked MY 3800 car with he axle I made, and BOTH sides ahve about 1/*" in/out play. If I loosen up the bolts for the Camber alignment and move the assembly outward, I have 1/8" play AND THE SHAKE GOES AWAY ! put it back to be "Aligned" and the shake comes back exactly like it was. (the engine/ trans IS centered, the drivers side axle play is perfect)
IS there a way to SHORTEN the Center part of the axle (cut a new groove for the retaining clip) to make the "working part" of the axle SHORTER ???? mustangsbeware, can this "safely be done"

Did this situation just present itself or has it been this way since day one of the swap?
Can you scoot the drivetrain over a tad?
Lou6t4gto JUN 30, 10:21 PM
the drive train cannot be moved. the Driver side axle has about 1/16-1/8 " play, move the drivetrain and then NEITHER side will have any play. as I said previously, this shake was never there UNTIL he had it Aligned ( read CAMBER adjustment), the 800 miles driven Before the alignment, there was NO Shake. if I move the camber adjustment, the axle has 1/16-1/8 and Does not shake. Put the camber back to the correct place and the shake returns and there's no play left for the axle. replacing the lower control arm bushings in the pass lower tomorrow, but have little hope it will solve the problem. Ball joint it also fine. Next, I WILL remove the AXLE and make an "adjustment" to it if needed.

sorry , guess I said that in a previous post about this
