Been doing a lot of research on GPS tracking devices for automobiles. Theft is always a concern and there is a way to combat this. Having not used a GPS tracker I am looking for info on how to employ such a device. From what I understand, you need he GPS tracker, a prepaid SIM card and the GPS tracker app on your phone. What I fail to understand is how the GPS tracker device uses its prepaid minutes. Is it always broadcasting and using air time or does it only use the minutes when you call the device? Also read that the device only supports 3G and I'm not sure what phones can interface with the device. Has anyone here used such a device and can tell us in detail how it works?------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. It wouldn't be a phone issue with the 3G, but a provider issue. Make sure any provider you might choose offers 3G speeds still, HSDPA is fine as well, as long as the GPS device supports it. Once the GPS device and your phone are connected to mobile networks, they switch to a data connection, so it uses TCP/IP addresses, which is universal connection type. Your phone and the GPS device would communicate over TCP/IP. 3G can have poor speeds, but as long as it is only sending location packets, it shouldn't be an issue.

**Edit** There wouldn't be any "minutes" used with this, it would only be data, so no dialing back and forth, it would be a data connection.[This message has been edited by damittron (edited 06-11-2019).]

Is there a GPS device that can be monitored from your Windows OS or must they be accessed from a cell phone?

I would imagine there are several which offer a web based (browser based) application that you can use to monitor the GPS. In fact - Here is one. https://www.gpswox.com/
It would appear to cost a fee, but depending on your level of paranoia, it may be worth it.

**Another edit** It looks like that one will track one GPS signal for free. YAY![This message has been edited by damittron (edited 06-11-2019).]

Thanks. I'm not really worried about mine, but we are about to start out city budget and we've been discussing putting trackers on the PD vehicles. Seems like some areas of this small city don't see a police car in a month while others see them multiple times a day and any time there's a stop, all 3 units on duty show up within a few minutes.
Sitting here watching Cheaters and their Cheaters Spy commercial comes on. But their trackers require a subscription to make them work. Everything I see is OBD II.[This message has been edited by fierofool (edited 06-11-2019).]

you can use an old iphone charged and left in the car. Use the find my iphone feature and it will show you were it is. Its an extra $20 on your data plan with verizon.

Some good tips here. Good to have theft and intrusion protection. In today's world there are thieve's everywhere. If you leave your car unattended in some areas. the local residents will either steal the car, strip it, take your expensive wheels or just break in and take all your stuff. Still not sure which way to go yet but it looks like some tracker will be needed. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. OK getting back to more serious stuff the way I understand it is that you need: The GPS tracker device suitable to work on 3G and 4G communications A mobile phone app and/or a website connection that retrieves the info from the tracker Google Earth app A prepaid SIM card for allowing the device connection to the internet or do you need just text?
When all is in place you PM the tracker and receive the coordinates of where the car is. If all this is correct then I buy on Amazon tomorrow.
