My driver's side decklid hinge broke- the pin that holds the two pieces together snapped apart. Is the decklid hinge repairable in this situation or do I need to source a decklid hinge? ------------------ Rick Stewart Yellow 5-spd Formula

You would at least need to source a new pin......and that would come from a functional hinge. So you need a new assembly either way. There are threads on how to work on the hinges safely...those torsion bars can be difficult and dangerous.

Gall, I took the broken hinge off and the old portions of pin are REALLY jammed in there. They must be pressed fit- really rusted. P-Blaster, a punch and a 3-pound hammer wouldn't even budge them! Hopefully I'll have a replacement hinge soon...

Yep, that's the one- the pin that sticks out in the illustration is also the pin that the decklid vent hooks onto.

Another forum member was kind enough to send me a replacement hinge. So now if anyone knows, what kind of lubricant have we decided will seep into that tight joint and keep these hinges lubed? I saw a couple of archived discussions about broken hinges but no mention of what is viscous enough to seep way down inside. TIA.

A good penetrating oil (low viscosity) like KROIL, will suffice, although regular oil should do as well since the new hinge will get used frequently.

For tight spaces exposed to water I like to start with WD-40, and follow up later with any motor oil. If your car is outside all the time, annual lubing would be a good idea, but a garage queen probably will never need more lube.

Thanks Joe and Gall. As far as my insurance company knows, it's stored in the garage. But IRL, I'll be stocking up on penetrating oil. Don't want to have to go through this more often than just for the occasional random engine swap.
