Weird dash backlight wiring issue (Page 1/1)

I have recently installed a new dash in an 85 GT I am fixing up. Currently the backlight dial when fully engaged turns on the footwell lights in the car and does not effect the dash lights. Via Trial and error I connected these loose wires via a jumper

After doing so the dial began working and I could control the backlight, while the car was also now making a dinging noise. It ceased working when I turned the power on in the car.

Does the solution to this feel obvious to anyone?

Blue chime box will turn on for several reasons. Dimmer knob turns off the box same turns off the lights so you can turn off while cleaning etc.
Dimmer is not wired to the foot lights. Rewired to do so may work or not.
