Fiero won't start, but has power? (Page 1/1)

I'm pretty new to working on cars so forgive me if this is a noob question. My 85 GT has been sitting for about a year and a half, but I'm trying to get it started this summer. When I turn the key the engine does not even try to start. The only noise I hear is a faint ticking/tapping noise. However, the headlights and taillights work fine. The dashboard also lights up with check engine and battery warning lights. I just replaced the battery, but nothing changed. Is it the starter or something else?

Could be the starter, but more likely it's corrosion in the connections. The battery cables need to be cleaned on both ends.....and the wiring at the starter should be loosened, cleaned and re-tightened. After all that and it still just clicks, it is probably the starter solenoid.

Just cleaned the battery cables. Still nothing. I'll try to get at the starter cables next chance I get. Thanks for the reply!

While cleaning off any corrosion is always a good idea, more than likely the starter solenoid is frozen. You might be able to free it by banging on it with a hammer.

Sounds kind of caveman, but yep tapping on a starter with a hammer can free it from being "stuck" temporarily. I've done it on many different vehicles. Then youd want to go buy a new starter since it confirms that is the problem.
