So the a/c compressor was damaged by a pass owner. And needs replacing. Since the oem system was r12 and I will have to put r134a should I need a different compressor or will a oem type work

Save yourself a lot of headaches and be sure to get a new (not remanufactured) compressor. Don't cut corners do the job correctly the first time around.

Ya, I was planning on a new unit. I'm amazed at the damage done by the past owner. Cat went bad and I finally got the car on a rack. The cat was installed backwards and it looks like a 8 pound hammer was used to remove the old one. At least one of his swings ended up smashing the back of the ac compressor. And a few other items. Cats fixed now. Had to replaced the whole exhaust from the head pipe back. Now that I know what's wrong with the ac I will move forward on fixing it.
