I just out ran my buddy's known 2.8 big time, both 86 GT 5 speeds. I'm wondering if somewhere down the line this engine has been swapped out with a 3.8. Is there a visual way to tell the difference, or do I need to read the serial numbers, and where would I find it on the engines?. I always thought this car was a little quicker than the 2.8's that I have driven before... Bobby

Well... They really don't look alike at all. Maybe you're thinking 3.4?

Fiero 2.8 engine (could be a 3.1 or 3.4 as well if someone did a little upgrade.
The 3800 doesn't look anything like this.

Okay, thanks guys. My engine looks just like my friends known 2.8. But mine is a crate engine, Sparta I think, The po had it put in. It is really faster than his 2.8. Maybe his is just worn out...Could you get a reman with upgrades? Maybe that's what was done...It's like an after burner kicks in at around 4k rpm... If it is a recent reman, it may not be a 2.8. Over 10 years ago, Groomes wasn't taking 2.8's for reman. Even if it was done by a local shop, it's probably bored out. May even be a 3.1 or 3.4. The 3.4 has a large F on each side of the block near the flywheel end. The 3.1 should have a crankshaft sensor port mid engine, trunk side, near the center freeze plug.

I don't see any sign of a crank sensor, But I do see what could be perceived as an F on the rear of the block near the distributor shaft. There's a small bead of black sealer across it, so I'm not really sure...I can't get a look at the other side, there's too much sh---stuff in the way Bobby

No, the F on the 3.4 is on the side of the block near the rear freeze plugs. There is also ribbing on the side of the block. I don't know what the 3.1 block looks like except that it may have the crankshaft sensor port. The 3.4 will also have a starter mount on the trunk side. The 3.1 was a front wheel drive engine and the starter boss will be in the correct place and both starter ears will be against the boss. On the 3.4, when installed in a Fiero, the forward starter bolt ear will be unsupported to the block.

If the flywheel has cast in weights on the backside, then it mostly likely is not a 3.1 or 3.4.
