I have followed a few threads on this forum and some of you seam to be well versed on this transmission. I have the drive train out of an 1989 Cadillac Eldorado that I am using in a custom application. I would like to run this setup with out a computer. I don't have any problem running a separate on/off switch for the converter. If any one on this site has any input on this it would be very helpful. If this can be done how should I wire it? Thanks in advance for your help. You can reach me at ( oneoff54@yahoo.com ) Bob Johnson

As far as I know, there is absolutely no computer control of the 440T4, other than the torque converter lockup. If you wire the 3rd (and/or 4th?) gear switch in series with the TCC, it should lock/unlock when it shifts into or out of the higher gears.
I'm not sure if yours is supposed to be "PWM applied", but I'm thinking it isn't.
OTOH, there are many here who know this trans much better than I do. I'm sure they'll chime in.

That setup is probably the 4.5L engine and it came with a non-electronic 4T60/440T4 transmission. If the swap is done using the original ECM all should work fine. The only drawback may be that this engine / trans combo will require nearly the same work as installing the 4.9L/4T60e. powertrain that has far more horsepower. The OP said custom installation, so if its not Fiero the answer may or may not be here. I would advise the op to use the ECM that came with the engine for better drivability, mileage and TCC lock function. It should be possible to use a powered switch to lock the TCC but you won't gain anything so why do it? ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. Thank you all for your fast responses. This engine ( 4.5 liter ) and transmission are in a custom trike I am building. I have replaced the fuel injection with a carb and reworked the distributer to work with like an early model GM distributer with an early ignition module and a vacuum advance to eliminate the computer. If you could do a simple sketch to show how to wire up the 3rd and 4th gear switch's it would be very helpful. If you e-mail me directly I can you some pictures. You all I am sure are much more educated than me about this stuff. thanks again. Bob Johnson
