Will the steering rack on a 1987 fit on a 1988 formula? (Page 1/1)

Hello!

So a few weeks ago (April 11, 2019) I bought a 1988 Fiero formula with a 5 speed manual, with a bunch of mods and stuff on it. On our way home tragedy struck and the cables snapped on the trailer and the car rolled off the trailer going down the freeway, and went straight into the guard fence. I’m extremely thankful that nobody was injured in this accident, but now I have to clean up from the accident. Being a young kid I don’t have much money. I work as much as I can to pay for repairs on the car. Thankfully though, my father has a 1987 parts car that has all the body pieces I needed, but the suspension components I need to fix the damage (upper control arm, steering rack, sway bar) are not able to be swapped between my ‘88 and his ‘87. My question for the forum members are as following:
1: Can I swap the old steering column directly to the ‘88?
2: If so, will I have to do any fab work to make it fit?
3: If anyone has the parts I am looking for, please send me a link to a posting or send me the details please, thank you!

No. The steering rack from the 84-87 will not work on an 88 Fiero. The steering columns are interchangeable, but the shaft from the column to the steering rack is also different.

The 84-87 suspension design might as well be from Ford when you are looking at compatibility with the 88 Fiero suspension... Nothing suspension related from the 84-87 will swap to the 88 fiero. So you need to source 88 fiero parts to fix any 88 suspension components.

The good news is that 88 suspension parts are the same for all 88 Fieros... So you don't need to source Coupe/Formula/GT specific parts, parts from any 88 Fiero will work.

Ask for the parts you need in the Mall section of the forum, or on the many fiero parts groups on facebook, or call up the Fiero Factory in Toney, AL.
