Window crank orientation (Page 1/2) |

I've taken off the interior door handles to replace the dew wipes, and fix my mirrors.
I'm wondering with the windows rolled up, which way should the window crank point? I was too disorganized to take a photo.
Did the factory do it a certain way? If so, which way was it? (that's something I'd like to restore to factory spec).
If there's no particular orientation, I'm thinking of two (three really) possibilities:
1. Pointing straight up or down; when the window is at the top of its travel, the window has the most friction. With the handle straight up or down, the human can apply the most torque to the crank. The arm is stronger with a forwards push / rearwards pull than trying to push/pull the knob up or down.
2. Pointing forwards and up; in most driving (windows up), this will keep the knob out of the way of the driver's (and passenger's) knee.
Edit: car is an 85 SE 2.8, auto (but converted to stick). Forum user Patrick would say that users must post engine/trans info while posting for help [This message has been edited by pmbrunelle (edited 05-08-2019).]

My 1985 SE V6 which I have owned since new has them orientated at approx' a 60* angle up/forward....Looking at the driver's door, it would be at the 1 o'clock position, basically. On the passenger door, it would be at the 11 O'clock position.....
This is a certified answer......from a certified nut.........

Doesn't really matter and doubt it matters at the factory either. If install by hand likely just anywhere or some rule knob is pointed to whatever but not exact.
Depending on car at hand, I install them w/ window close so can easily find the knob w/o looking and/or knob doesn't hit my leg while driving. This includes new cars w/ cranks that doesn't line up for me. In Fiero pointed to somewhere in upper arm rest I think before getting PW doors.
Notes: Clip goes on so open side is pointed to arm/knob. So the removal tool can work one handed and hold the part from falling. If your careful, clip should stay on the crank enough not to fall down either. If clip is off or wreck... Install the clip fully on the crank then just push crank on shaft. New clips are easy to get so don't bother w/ rusty/damage ones.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. Every manual window Fiero I have seen has the crank at 10 (pass) and 2 (driver).
Just like Dr. Pepper...

When asking for help with an oil leak, sure. When asking for help with "window crank orientation"... not as critical.

That answers my question in time for my door re-assembly this upcoming weekend. I like to have parts/knowledge/beer/tools ready before I begin work.
Thanks guys.

Little known fact: the Duke window cranks are positioned at 10 & 2, but the 2.8 cranks are at 2 & 10... Makes them easier to grab while pinned back in your seat from the faster acceleration of the V6.

But it IS critical in this situation.......V6 cars have their cranks mounted at 60 degrees, while 4 cylinder cars are at straight up......or have I been "Mis-sled".....? (I was under the impression that the engine wouldn't run right, otherwise.........)(Maybe it would run.......>>>>>>.........."Left"......?)

I'd go for this, but be aware this may change with driver height and seat position.
