Started work on Dad's car. Need a little advice (Page 1/1)

Hello everyone,

I've started to work on Dad's 88 GT. For a refresher it's got a 355 crate motor, FastX ECU and MSD ignition system. The only info I have to go on is the last thing Dad told me, which is the MSD box suffered a thermal failure and would need to be replaced. I thought I'd hook up a battery to the car and check the rest of it out.

When the battery is connected I hear a relay click once every .5 seconds and all the interior lights (cabin, radio, instrument cluster) click on and off with the relay sound. My question is, can a faulty MSD ignition system cause that behavior, or is there something else I need to look at? According to the last info I have from Dad there was nothing else wrong prior to the MSD box failing, and unfortunately he's no longer around to ask.

If anyone has some info to share or a recommended troubleshooting direction, It's welcomed.
Dan

Does car have an alarm system?

I don't believe so. What path does it lead you down if it does?

I would suggest disconnecting the ignition system and then try re-connecting the battery and see if you still get the clicking/lights on/off problem.

It sounds like there is a circuit breaker installed and something has a short which is repeatedly triggering the breaker. I would disconnect the MSD box and see if it continues.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to take a dive into it tomorrow. Let's see what works out.

Is the clicking sound a fan? Just where is the sound emulating from?

Edit: Your Dad was a class act. A top notch individual that brought joy to the forum through his passion with the Fiero. You are not lucky to have lost him, but are absolutely blessed for having him.
