Cracked GT 1/4 windows... (Page 1/2)
Tony Kania MAY 06, 11:33 AM
Has anyone welded two sections together?

What material is the window made out of actually?

I have one that is old and has a large crack in it. I plasti-dipped both windows about a year or two ago, but the dip is horrendous and had to go. I plan on painting them black, but first need to "fix" a large crack. Any suggestions to weld? I can handle the prep afterwards, just need some advice.

Thanks in advance!

Cyanocrilate, 5 min epoxy, or acrylic glue from a plastics shop should work.

I used "Plastic" 5 minute epoxy the first time. Valleyed out the material and all. Separated quickly. I threw two FIERO stickers on it to hide the reformed crack under the plastic dip.

I use super glue a lot. I think that would also separate quickly?

Really hoping to weld it, but completely understand if it is a biatch. Cheap and not looking to go with aftermarkets at the moment or ever for that matter. I should just post for a new/used quarter. I want them painted anyway. I like the look of black and I am not one to complain about sight lines. Just have to get rid of the sparkly cracked look.

...Have you tried JB weld? I've had very good luck with that stuff on a lot of different materials...But don't us it on anything that gets hot, as in manifold pipes, it melts. Don't ask me how I know that...

Hmm? I have JB welded the shat out of many things and never even made contact with my brain to use it here. Ever!

Loctite sells a super glue for plastic that is also cyanoacrylate.

I hate when that happens Tony, we've all been there...

I have repaired chipped quarter windows with JB weld and plastic epoxy and both seem to hold but if the crack is in the middle I see no way that the wndow can be fixed and still be cosmetically pleasing.

Go to a sign supply shop and purchase a small can of IPS Weld On 3. It comes in 1 pint cans. It's what display companies use to bond plexiglas displays. It's been years since I purchased that brand, but I still have half of it remaining. It is a flash dry solvent so that it doesn't burn and fog the plexiglas. At the same time, get a small hypodermic bottle for application.

The bottle is just a 1 or 2 oz plastic squeeze bottle with a hypodermic needle in the top. Simply touch the tip of the needle to the crack, tip the bottle up to allow the solvent to flow. It works by capillary action, instantly seeping into the crack and bonding the 2 surfaces.

Edit:

I don't know exactly where you're located, but try American Products in Auburn, Washington. They fabricate acrylic Point of Purchase displays so they use a similar product. A Google search didn't return anything for the Weld On 3, so it's probably not made any more. Looks like SciGrip 16 or 1802 is an equivalent. Curbell Plastics in Fife, Wa. is a wholesaler. They may be able to steer you to a shop near you that uses it.

Quit looking at the sight lines ?

No, I get it. You likely mean when standing outside the car, ie what other people might see. My 86GT was like that.

How I solved it :
I simply drilled an access hole and then cut it out with a sabre saw. Leaving the dot matrix border and the front section which can not be seen through and has the GT logo.

It looked much better.
