Turn signal stalk (Page 1/2) |

I have a problem...my legs are so damn long, that when I get in my 87 GT, I tend to hit the turn signal stalk...and break it off! I have replaced it twice in about 2 weeks now, because it sticks out past the steering wheel and my knee catches it. I have tried to be careful getting in, but have obviously forgotten at least twice that this is a problem!
Anyway - has anyone else had this problem, and if so, has anyone found a shorter stalk that works with the Fiero? I thought about modifying one, but the replacement stalks tend to be cheap pot metal and aren't suited to being welded or modified.
If anyone has any other methods they may have used to successfully keep from breaking this thing, I would be very happy to hear about it!
TIA, D.

You could try putting the steering wheel all the way up before you get out of the car, and maybe slide the seat all the way back too. Sounds like a pain, but cheaper than buying turn levers. Or you could try getting in a different way. Some guys sit on the seat first then bring one leg in at a time. I find it easier to put my right leg in first, hold on to the windshield frame with my left hand, and lower myself in, then I bend my left leg and pull it in. Have you tried just putting the turn lever in right turn position before you get out? [This message has been edited by FX (edited 05-06-2019).]

I currently have a super glued stalk in operation on my GT.
Just a thought that I had in the past because I have/had the same issue. I would like to make the stalk shorter and placing the cruise control package in the driver ashtray. I have seen shorter stalks on other vehicles that were not used for the turn signal, but could be modified I believe with a bit of thinking. Just not short enough turn signal stalks.

Thanks guys. Relocating the cruise control is a great idea...I may need to do some prototyping! I do have the steering wheel all the way up, as well as the seat all the way back, old habit to swing the wheel up to get out, but my height requires the seat all the way back to be comfortable when driving. In the mean time, I may have to put a big sign on the steering wheel to remind me to take my time getting in, and to use the "sit, swing lets in" method!

I have always been frustrated by the stalk being horizontal.......All my other cars over the years have had the stalk angled up 10-15 degrees, which of course would move it out of the way for entry/exit ease..........And yes, I know that the thing setting the angle is the switch- not the stalk itself (Although the base of the stalk could be angled.......)

Interesting thought. I can see where a bend could be placed to angle the stalk upward.

As it's your basic GM / Saginaw column, might be that you could find a shorter lever from another vehicle. Trick of course is finding one with the same options you have (variable wiper, cruise, etc.) NB: I've not actually tried or looked, so I could be talking about out of my you-know-what.
After a while of adjusting to falling into the Fiero butt-first, then swinging the legs in, I'm finding myself doing that in my daily as well, which is funny as it does not require such silliness.

Lol, thought I was the only one that did the "butt first" entry approach! I am not tall at all and if I do not out the colum up I hit it as well. Not well designed in that regard.

I have noticed that in the last 10 years my Fiero seems to be getting lower and lower- I KNOW I have not modified the suspension....What the heck is going on....?

HA! I have noticed, mine seems to lower over the course of the day, as I work on it. By the end of the day, it seems to be in a hole!
