'88 Vin R Engine Compatibility (Page 1/1)

Are there major differences between the '88 VIN R and the '89 - 92 VIN R engines? I believe that the later engines had a timing chain instead of a gear. I want to swap my '88 with a complete later engine which would include the engine components such as the throttle body, manifolds, coils, etc.

See my Cave, DIS L4 Replace

Most of them should work and use same TBI type and DIS parts but have the balancer driven by the the crank that fails same for 88 Fiero.
Easy give away is filter in the pan.

If you want more power...
First check that you "floored" the gas pedal = TBI is at WOT. Many aren't for several reasons and you won't get power from current or any swap engines.

Turn arm on TBI and look inside. Then have help to flood the pedal.
Or if you have a ECM scanner just look at throttle angle/%
