Hi guys, My name is John from Northeast Pa. I have been reading tons of the great post on here for info that I needed before buying my 1986 Sports Coupe 2.5L. ( sitting for 22 years) I want to restore it! . Thanks for all the info from various posts that helped me make this purchase. I do like the Notchback look but have done a ton of reading on the fastback swap. I get it, all the parts, wiring etc. I have some questions that stumped me and I can't find the answer through searching. Oval trunk/weather seal to rectangular trunk/ weather seal. How does this swap over to a Fast back trunk? I have never seen a Gt Fast back up close. Are the trunks different or some how just the weather strip? Any help is appreciated! I have to be able to mentally grasp the scope of the swap before I commit. thank you. John

The oval ends of the trunk are squared off with plastic pieces that securely attach. Be aware that good condition GT trunk seals are expensive, if you can find them.

There are two plastic pieces that fill in the sides of the trunk opening.....Then the square seal fits over them. When I did my swap, I didn't seal between the plastic pieces and the original trunk edge, so driving in the rain I would get water in the trunk...Finally sealed it properly amd problem solved....

Make sure you check price and availability of fastback taillights before you make the plunge.

Hey thanks for your help! I got it now. I googled a lot of pics on Fiero trunks and could see the Fastback trunks are shorter than notchbacks. I thought maybe there was actually a rectangular trunk built in at the factory but no. And yes I can see the Ebay pricing on Gt tail lights ..... I think just buy a Gt fastback vs $700 lights! Yikes! Thanks for the help.

The plastic pieces are called D-plates.
I'd just stay away from the fastback stuff, especially considering that you already have a notchie. If you ever have a taillight ding with the fastback, some helpful Fiero enthusiast will try gouging you on the price when you seek a replacement.
If you stick with the notchie, that doesn't happen.[This message has been edited by pmbrunelle (edited 04-24-2019).]

What I plan on doing in the future for tail lights (My GTs are damaged) is I am going to cover the whole opening with Hexcel grillwork, paint the cavity black, and use trailer tail lights that will mount behind the grill- it will appear that the whole opening is just a vent, until the tail lights light up.....(I'll probably get pulled over a few times for it but CA doesn't have a safety inspection. I am using two long tail light fixtures per side to copy the Pontiac style twin-slot tail lights from the 60s-70s....
A variation on this idea is to make up "Infinite mirror" tail lights to go in the cavity....But that would be a lot of work........
