No power past 3500 rpms (Page 1/2)

I have searched and can not find anything that's fits the issue fully. So I have a 87 v6 2.8 gt. New alt. New distributor. (Other issue) starts and idles just fine. Drives fine until I get to 3500 rpms. Then simply no guts. Will still do 70mph with no problem. Just hit a wall at 3500. All ideas welcomed

First place I'd check would be timing, followed by the coil.

The next check might be CAT blockage.

Free revs nicely. And sounds good so don't think it's a cat. But can a Ignition Module (IM) fail and it keep running. from what I remember the IM handle Timing to a set point then the ECM takes over. Could this IM not be passing control over.

Check dist to see if it moved and its still locked down solid. I know that not checking the timing but I did the timing two weeks ago and it was good then and it can move..

And its not throwing a service engine light at all. (Light does work, Disconnected Throttle position sensor and it came right on.)

Its runs so nicely otherwise and free revs like nothings wrong.

(Just bugging the H out of me)

Can’t rule out the CAT just because it free revs well.. seen many a cars that has plugged converters and have similar problems. I would “gap” the exhaust just before the CAT and go for a test drive. It’s free to try and fairly simple to do.

Buy yourself an automotive vacuum gauge and google how to use it to check for bad cat. Make sure engine and exhaust is warmed up 1st.
Less than 15 bucks on Amazon.

Checked timing, it's just perfect. So thinking I slagged the cat. Is there only one o2 sensor?
Gall757 APR 24, 08:55 AM
only one

So I can do a test bypass with no worry of the o2 throwing a fit.

The usual test is to pull the O2 sensor and see if the car runs better.
