High Oil Pressure (Page 1/1)
Firezappy AUG 31, 06:39 PM
Been daily driving my Fiero for a few weeks now, really enjoying it. But the oil pressure seems to run on the high side, after the engine is fully warmed up it will idle at 40, but if you stomp it expect 65-75. Sometimes it will even idle as high as 60. Is this bad for a 2.5 Duke? Should I try changing the oil pressure sensor? Does the duke have an oil pressure relief valve somewhere? Any easy way to get a direct reading on the duke?

It isn't bad for it but it's very unlikely. Change the sensor and be sure your gauge indicates 0 with ignition off, cold engine. Do not use teflon tape on the sensor threads.

Think I will do that. Anyone know the general area of where the sensor would be? It's the 88 Duke. I'm sure I can find it but I know sometimes these things are kind of hidden. Thanks!

My service manual shows it right above the oil filter.

Thanks for the pointer. I downloaded a pdf manual for the 88 Duke. It's a little different then the other Fieros, the oil filter is a cartridge oil filter, and you install it in the drain port under the car. But with the manual it was easy to find.

maybe bad sender but likely iffy gauge or wiring problem still have same if you replace sender.
88 engines already use better sender but rarely can still wear or go bad.
Check w/ a real mechanical gauge before doing anything.

Wish I had a mechanical gauge. Maybe one my buddy car guys has one. Thanks, I think I will do that. Might need to buy one but they don't seem to expensive.

1988 value leader, 5 speed, 54k miles:

I have noticed elevated oil pressure and have an oil leak. Here's what happened:

Prior to doing my first oil change on the car (I've been driving it a week) the oil pressure was mostly around 40.
I used 5W30 and a NOS AC Delco oil filter, pre-1996 logo. The gasket and paper looked good, but this may have been a mistake.
After replacing the oil and oil filter, my oil pressure increased. At cold start it's around 60 on the gauge. When the engine warms up it drops, but generally to ~50, sometimes getting down to 40 or a little lower at idle. It never gets above 60.

Maybe unsurprisingly I've developed an oil leak; I noticed the leak almost immediately after performing the oil change. The leak is probably from the valve cover gasket. I'm going to replace that this weekend.

Now that I've typed this I realize I should replace the oil filter with a New New Stock one, right?
This will also require changing the oil.

So finally, my main question:

1) What is the likelihood that the pressure increase was due to the NOS Oil filter? Is there some other culprit I should check?

2) Have I done any damage to the engine besides making it leak? I've checked the oil level the whole time and it's never gone below "Add"

Again, Do Not Trust a dash gauge!
OP sender reads system pressure After the filter and pump on 88 duke and change filter won't matter.
5w-30 is correct oil.

Have it tested w/ a real gauge on same port OE sender uses.
Might find real OP gauge in "Free Tools" at AZ and others.

Valve cover leak, use Felpro VS50179T and follow kit directions. Not FSM, Haynes and other methods.
Do Not use any type of sealer w/ this kit.

If V cover is wrecked/bad then use Dorman Valve Cover 264-905 including oil cap and pcv grommets.

New VC w/ screw cap seals much better then old 1/4 turn cap.

AZ, AdvanceA, and others can Meet or Beat TFS and RA prices and shipping and if you need to return for any reason most use local stores w/o more cost to you.
AZ AA and other online has many discounts and free ship on orders > X $ too.

Got a good deal on a gauge from Craigslist. Should have the right threading in one of the adapters.

Going to inspect for the leak first, probably post some pics of that, too.
