Pop up the speaker covers with a flat screwdriver. Be extra careful not to damage your brittle dashboard!

It's amazing how brittle the dash is! I was gentle and it still cracked. When you pry the speaker, make sure you have something large and solid to pry against.

NEVER pry the speaker covers off.
Even trying to distribute the load across a wider area on an old brittle vinyl dash can still crack it

Use a small wire or thin metal "hook" tool and PULL the speaker covers off.
Gently work your way around the perimeter of the speaker cover, applying gradual effort at the 4 corners to pull the studs out of the rubber grommets .

OR rather than even take the chance of cracking the dash or damaging your speaker covers, try reaching up from underneath the dashboard and pushing the speaker cover out from below. I prefer this method as all I have to do is give the prongs on each of the 4 pegs a light squeeze and push to pop the speaker cover up enough to easily lift it out of the way. This is definitely easier on the passenger side, but you should be able to reach around the steering column on the drivers side providing you don't have huge forearms.

That's a much better idea! I never thought of that

I learned the "hard way".
When I got lucky enough to find a dash in *perfect* condition I didn't take any chances with it after that.
Ok, I did take a few chances... but not with the vinyl

Speaker cover cloth looks oddly "purple" in this photo, but it is actually black.

How long did it take you guys to get the dash off? My mechanic, who doesn't really even want to try it, is saying something like 4 hours. Yes? No?
(This was about fixing dampers/vents that control air direction, heat/no heat, over heater coil, and also, unrelated, possibly replacing at least one speaker.)

You do not have to remove the dash to get to the heater box control doors.
