Alternator / Battery issues 1986 GT 2.8L - the battery was not charging, so I 1. Replaced battery 2. Still didn't charge 3. Replaced Alternator 4. Still didn't charge 5. Had the old alternator tested - it was good after all I'm about to change the Battery terminal bolts and check all grounds. Is there an external fuse somewhere in the fuse panel? or fusible link? What else should I look for? Thank you MR

I forgot to add, it does start with no problems and it runs great! The only problem is that it's running only off the battery!

This may sound odd.
Look at your center console volt meter and determine if the VOLTS light is on (key on, engine off). If you don't see it, it may be burned out, and that would prevent your alternator from charging the battery.

I've checked the volt gauge and the volt light goes on. Thanks for the suggestion. Could a bad engine ground make that much of a difference?

I thought I had that one figured out for sure.....oh well.
The alternator grounds through it's metal case to the bracket and then the engine. Is there any paint or shim in the way?

No shim in the way. I've owned it for 3 years and it worked fine. About mid 2014 it started to act up, then it just stopped charging the battery. Last month I had to finally buy a new battery.

unplug the alternator 2 wire plug & turn on the key - volt light should be off. Plug back in - light should come on if yes to both the brown wire circuit is ok
check for power at the plug's red wire and the red wire at the stud on the back of the alternator with the key off - should be 12v or light a 12v test light if no power the alternator fusible link is bad[This message has been edited by AL68 (edited 03-02-2015).]

I just did that and I have power. Now, Where would the alternator fusible link be. Sorry for that question, electrical problems are not my strong point. If you have a picture of the location that would really help. Thank you MR

This is awesome! I discovered a bad connection plus a bad belt. It's now charging strong and I can use the heater without the voltage dropping. Thanks everyone for your help.
