84' 2.5 winter build (Page 1/2)
mckaymotoworks NOV 12, 11:35 AM
After talking it over with a few of the seasoned vets on here, I have decided on the following modifications over the winter.
Please feel free to offer proven advice (not hearsay), corrections were needed.

Engine

1. 552 cast head w/porting, Buick 350 intake 1.88" valves,old style Z28 springs, Dodge V8 pushrods (need model please)
2. ARP Vortec 350 rocker studs, Chevy 250 inline-6 rocker arms. (recommendation on brands?)
3. 87+ connecting rods
4. TRW forged .30 pistons
5. Cam
6. Holley intake w/Holley TBI
7. TCI Rattler balancer
8. Custom mandrel bent exhaust with Magnaflow SS muffler, Magnaflow hiflo cat
9.Swap to 4 speed

Recommendations on gasket brands?

Modest expectations, looking for more midrange spunk and the general fun of doing an unusual project. Port/head work will be performed by locally renowned hot rod shop that is GM centric.
Car is staying in the family, something to leave the kids, have them help with the build. Not ever looking to recoup money, but build something different.

Suspension/steering

1. Koni Special D front/rears
2. Eibach springs
3. All Moog rubber bushings
4. Rebuilt rack & pinion
5. New tie rods, ball joints etc
6. Rodney's cradle kit

Brakes

1. Centric front/rears
2. EBC Green pads
3. SS brake hoses
4. New rear hubs

Does that Mallory Distributor have the Ignition Control Module, or is it an old school distributor??
I'd make sure it has the ICM, or you might be getting into more problems with the computer.

My only other advice is to get a sample of the rockers you want to use, and make sure they fit. On my SD head, I am having a helluva time finding rockers that are the right length to contact the center of valve correctly. I've just ordered my third set.

Question...will the balancer fit with the 84 accessory drive? I was interested in getting a balancer for my SD build, but was thinking that the belts might not align anymore.

On the Mallory, I will have to look at that, damn good point. Saw it listed on Summit, needed a new one, but part sites make mistakes too.
On the balancer, that I do not know. I will call them today.

3 bolt setup, should work with existing pulley he told me.

Both Summit and Mallory show it listed as fitting 84' 2.5:
Mallory distributor

No mention of ICM. Confusing why they would offer it with a stock 2.5

EDIT: Yes, oversight on their part. Fits that block, or the SD4 variation with carbs. I got my hopes up, a nice rebuilt stocker will work fine.

Out of pure curiosity, could this replace the TBI portion of the ECM/distributor setup?
MSD Atomic TBI

I don't have that kind of budget, and overkill for my setup. Would probably be pretty sick on an SD4

Those kind of things are primarily for 8 cylinder cars. There is a guy on here, that tried a similar 'self learning' TBI/ECU combo on his SD4 using one made for a 6 cylinder jeep, and he found it did not work as advertised.

Holley intake and TBI? You're gonna need tuning.
Wanna tune a TBI? I haven't found anything better than Bob R's EBL P4 flash, mounted on a 1987-1988 4 cylinder ECM bracket.

You can re-pin the engine harness to use the regular GM connector (instead of the OEM edge-card connector) pretty easily as long as you have a "buttcrack" crimp tool. The pins are still sold through Digikey/Mouser.

Thanks for the heads up Kurt. Any links?

I am leaning towards http://www.dynamicefi.com as well.
Bob recommended the EBL Flash for me.
