88 slider boots (Page 1/1)

Ok...I am ready to hunt down the person who designed the 88 brakes ( I know...it's probably just me).

So, I just spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to reinstall the sliders on the drivers side front caliper. No matter what I do I cannot get the boots to seat. I have followed the 88 manual method (nope!!), I have yelled, I have screamed and now I have been defeated.

Any ideas before I call it a day an buy new calipers?

Thanks

May sound dumb but I have resorted to putting a coat of wax on one end of the slider then filling the groove with bondo then knocking out the bondo when the slider came through the boot.

I have always been successful using the method from the FSM, but you do need to follow that procedure exactly. Be sure the boots and slider pins are both well lubricated before you begin. I have also found that it sometimes helps to rotate the slider pin with respect to the boot when trying to insert it.

The lube seems to make the situation worse.

Put an A/C (or any other type) O-ring in the grooves of the slider.
They keep the boot from getting hung up on the slider groove and popping out as you push the slider past the boot.

I know this is an old thread, but the comment I need to make goes right here.

If anyone is forming a pitchforks-and-torches brigade to go after the designer of those slider boots... count me in. Like michfiero, I spent WAY too much time today fooling with those things. All of mine are OEM. The better the condition, the easier it was to get them to seat. I have a couple that flat out refused to seat.

Would the Fiero Store boots work better?

Hey Formula Owner, GT owner here. Okay I will give you my technique but don't tell anyone. It is my secret. I did 4 '88 calipers a few weeks ago so I learned the hard way. I used the brake grease. I put one boot on the caliper then pushed the slider through from the other side and while holding that boot on, push it past the groove in the slider and to just below the body on the empty side. Now put the next boot on the caliper and push the slider back through and engage the groove with the boot. Both boots should now be engaged to the slider grooves and still on the caliper as well. I used a small 90 degree pick tool to un-engage the first boot to let the slider come through. A bit of a process and frustrating but it worked for all 16!
