Building the Ultimate 2.8L (Page 9/9)

with modified V8 connecting rods and the spring seats modified to accept larger V8 springs, GM was able to spin their performance a 2.8 to 8k. I'm pretty sure the old V6/60 performance book documents the trimming needed to use the heavier duty V8 connection rods.

A 2.8 at 6000rpm needs/flows as much air as a 3.4 at 4900 rpm. Given the same heads and all else being equal, that's how the numbers play out as long as the cam is there to support the target rpm. Larger displacement induces larger airflow. Larger airflow requires more fuel.

Also, a few years ago at the track, I met a guy who is on the Z24 forums and he said he built his 2.8 to 300 HP and used custom 14:1 pistons.

Uh huh... A Cavi Z24 with a 300HP Gen II 2.8MPFI Compression and a cam won't get you there with that Gen II intake...

You'd have to search the Z24 forums, he told me he has a build thread. This thread is titled "Building the ultimate 2.8", not "Building the Ultimate Fiero 2.8" which is why I even bothered mentioning it...

Out of curiosity, do you know the builders name over there?

Its all the big and little things you guys are mentioning that i was looking for and you are all doing a great job. Still need some clarification on the valve float issue. Not sure my decisions on the valve train and cam choice.

If 175 HP is what you want, you can certainly squeeze out more power from the 2.8L N/A but when you modify with high compression, porting, larger injectors and a long duration cam this engine becomes very difficult to tune. The stock speed density ECM doesn't like many performance cams and when you upsize injectors fueling also becomes difficult to adjust. Not trying to discourage you but prepare you for the chip reprogramming that lies ahead. Good luck with the project.

I think - even if you are on a budget - that finding a good low mileage 3.4 or even a good rebuildable 3.4 with your heads, 260H cam, headers, intake porting, TB porting, etc. would be the way to go for a "stock" look and added performance that is reliable and economical. The 3.4 other than some drill work for the starter mount is a direct bolt in motor. Just my 2 cents!

How did this thread escape the archive? 6 years of no posting!

my engine runs great with a high output coil and 8.5 mm wires. no valve float, on a circle tract i hit the end if the straight away and is still pulling. i hope you find happyness with your engine. you must be single
