F23 all the way.

Man you're really setting yourself up for one big ban hammer. Keep going.

Today, many years later, I am running a Getrag behind 407HP 3800 turbo engine. And have been for the last 10 years or so.
It's the clutch that takes the pain with my driving technique.
(And I suspect Dark horizon's as well?)

You can run manual gearboxes behind a 3800 as long as you are not a high revs/bouncing off the limiter and drop the clutch type of driver!

Years back when I was drag racing and driving a stick we would "wind up" the transmission to prevent breakage. This technique involved going to the starting line in first gear and braking to keep tension in the transmission before moving on the launch. We feathered the clutch to take away any possible rollback where there might be backlash and shock on the transmission gears.. I can't say if this idea would work on a Fiero. It may have some merit but 500HP sounds pretty optimistic for a Getrag to handle..

I fact this is exactly what I do for launching, and in general for hard gear changes. It's my clutch disc that suffers, not the gearbox.
My Getrag's still going strong...

dumb question, is the getrag 5 out of anything alright? im looking at what's listed as a "getrag 5 260 e30". Still learning as I jump into the deep end!

There are a lot of different Getrags, in other brands and configurations, as well as the ones we're interested in. Be careful.

If you want a Getrag, look for a 282. 86-90 or 91. Must be for a GM application. Find one for a V6. 2.8 or 3.1. The later ones have better differential gears, and different slave cylinder setups, but all have been adapted to Fieros. (One from a Quad 4 or Ecotec will not bolt up.)
Also consider a New Venture Gear T-550. It's essentially a 282, with a hydraulic release bearing, also with the better differential gears. Find one from a 3.1 Cavalier or similar. I think they made those 92 and 93. Maybe 94.

The F23 is also a Getrag. It's widely considered the sturdiest 5 speed that you can find for our application. The only real issue is that the one from the 2.2 OHV Cavalier (which is the one that will bolt to our blocks) has shorter gearing (3.91?) than most would prefer. Some people have built hybrids, and are quite happy.

The F23 can use stock Fiero manual axle assemblies. The F40 requires custom axles.

You also might stumble across a 284. They came in the 3.4 DOHC W-body cars. They are supposed to be a bit stronger than a 282, but are not rebuildable - no parts - and are pretty much absurdly expensive. They also have a strange (relatively speaking) clutch.

Makes me wonder what the hell he/it was trying to accomplish.

What would the 282 come out of?

-edit nvm sorry for the dumb question. wikipedia has all the answers.
