Has anyone tried pulling air from under the car?

Good idea because that is where but cold air is - down low.
I thought about it but then you also pull up all the dirty air kicked up by the front tires. That made it a NO GO for me.

Unless you drive on non-paved roads, I wouldn't think that would be a big deal.

Hey guys,
I'm bumping this old thread because there was some interesting discussion, and I wanted to add my thoughts to two of the items in here:
1 - The factory air cleaner and water separator. There's some good threads linked above, and an image. I've modified one of them using AI, so it looks a little jacked when I erased the air-flow lines... but wanted to focus on two points. When you look at the air separator, there are two "pinch points" in the airflow that I think are less than great, I put these in orange:

I seem to recall there was an article from back in the day (Herb Adams, maybe?) that tested the stock air flow... and saw no improvement on an otherwise totally stock engine. Anyone have the link to this?
2 - I noticed there's a lot of discussion on "temperature." Two points I'll make on this... the Iron Duke was originally designed to run at 180 degrees, and the V6/60 likely would have also, had it not been created immediately following the 195 degree thermostat regulation. I don't think going to 160 degrees is a good decision, at all... but I also think 195 degrees is not optimal in hotter climates. I use 180 degree thermostat in the summer. But my main point was the engine heat. I think the engine does a great job of reducing engine heat, but if the Fiero is a hobby / fun car... you can do what I've done with other cars, and that's ceramic coat the exhaust manifolds, or even use header wrap as far down as you're willing to go. It can trap water if you leave the car outside... (it's not going to trap water if you drive it and then park it)... but doing so helps the catalytic converter operate better, and significantly reduces underhood temperatures (not engine temperatures) which makes everything last longer, wires, rubber, etc.

My cold air set up on my 3800 SC swap is basically a modified stock air filter can with three inch pipe in and out that allows air from the modified side scoop to the filter into the throttle body. The Fiero side scoop was hogged out. The fake small air grill is ground open and a number of 1/2" holes drilled at the bottom. If you do not modify the stock Holly style side scoop you will end up with a restriction on a modified engine. It seems all is OK as am running the N* throttle body that is 75mm in diameter. Being that there is a screen there too I believe we have plenty of airflow. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. For my 3800 setup, I did away with all the stock air intake. Just a big old cone filter and 100mm diameter pipe there now. All hidden behind the wheel arch plastic liner. You can hear the air sucking/flow sounds near to the original grill in the body, but most of the air is drawn from below the car; there's a huge gap between le wheel arch liner and the structure of the car.
