Is the steel ball fixed to the shaft? Or is it able to rotate? Seems like the cylinder would cause a substantial amount of friction. Not only does it rotate within the socket in the bellcrank, it has to slide up and down a bit, too.

I used high-tack silicone grease. I chose that because it'll stay where you put it, for a long time. IMO that's more important than being super slippery. But in all fairness, any decent grease should work.

Check the Rodney Dickman site. You can see pictures of original shifter with ball under shifter rebuild

All back together. I "clearanced" the socket in the bellcrank, and did the same with the pivot point. I also removed the rubber O-rings from the pivot shaft, since they seemed to be binding things up. (This was also, apparently, a variation on a Rodney fix.) As I was screwing it all back together, I lubed everything with white lithium grease. It all moves much easier than before. (When I moved the select lever at the trans, before, it would stay where I moved it, and not "re-center" itself. Now, it re-centers.) To help matters even more, I installed my normal 88 "tall" shift handle, instead of the short 84 handle I had been using. Once everything wears in, and I get a bit more used to it, I might switch back to the 84 handle, or something in between the two.
So... for purposes of this thread, I'm calling it "good". I certainly appreciate everyone's help and input.

My experience with white lithium grease in bicycles is it is great when fresh but with time it gums up. ------------------ formerly known as sanderson 1984 Quad 4 1886 SE 2.8L 1988 4.9L Cadillac 1988 3800 Supercharged

Thanks for that. At least now I know where to look, next time. I truly appreciate your (and everyone else's) assistance and advice.
I'm pretty self-sufficient, right up until I'm not. [This message has been edited by Raydar (edited 07-20-2022).]
