It acts like a tether to keep the distributor from floating out of the engine bay.
The ICM instructs the coil when to fire, the same as breaker points do on older ignition systems.

Thank you Patrick. That struck me while I was away for Easter (just got back) . The coil is not constantly firing for 6 plugs, So I deduced the firing comes from pulses from the ignition pickup, signaling the ecm in the base, and out to the coil through the short and only wire between the two. So , had someone turn it over, ignition on with a multimeter. Nothing.....The wire is dead.Cost of a distributor with all the parts is not bad. So, that next. Reload shotgun : ) While I am waiting, the previous owner gave me wires and plugs Call me butter, I am on a roll. I will do that too. This car is only a few months old to me. I like a baseline. Why not ? And the firewall side plugs are supposed to be a bear to change. Go through the top by feel, or jack it up and go underneath ? I will come back later and update, in case this happens to someone else.[This message has been edited by gatorfrey (edited 04-18-2022).]

You need a 3/8" ratchet with a swivel head, the standard assortment of extensions, and a sparkplug socket. This is all based upon the premise that they aren't rusted into place, and starting to decompose. But since it's a 3.4, at least they're not the ones that were in it when it left the factory.
If you have some help, you can remove the decklid, but it really isn't necessary. If you do that, be careful to disconnect all the wiring. (4 pin connector on the right hinge box, and a ground wire on the left hinge box.) Also mark the positions where the bolts are, that hold the decklid into the hinge brackets. Just remove the four 13mm bolts that hold the hinge bracket to the decklid. Do not remove the torx bolts, or the hinges from the hinge box.[This message has been edited by Raydar (edited 04-18-2022).]

Update : I picked up a brand new, not reman, distributor from Amazon for 70 bucks. Swapped it out,Started right up. I eyeballed and put the cajun tune on twisting the distributor close enough to get me to a timing light in town where I will get it dead on. Now, while it was down, the seller had given me a set of in the box spark plug wire and plugs. I put all that on. On plug number 6 I was visually comparing the old an new, and caught the delcos I put it were a string of letters and numbers. But I noted they had a 2 near the end. The ones I took out had 3 on the side. I am guessing they are a size colder on the new ones, It has a 3.4 in it. I poked around the web, but just did not find the info to see. I kinda hate to, but if I have to, I will find what I took out and change them. It ran fairly strong before. I could pick on toyotas, nissans, and hondas for the time being, until I put an LS or 3800 in it later. Probably was the ICM. But for 70 bucks, its all new, I don't mind. Have a good weekend !!
