Today at the suggestion of the previous owner I re-installed the stock Eprom in the ECM. Then I started the car, warmed it up and confirmed the base timing was still at 6 degrees BTDC (EST wire disconnected). This was followed by a test drive. My V8 Fiero now runs fantastic. It lost maybe 5% of peak horsepower (butt dyno), runs 20 degrees cooler, there is zero hesitation under hard acceleration in all gears and it never back fires!
The car is now fun to drive all the time. I don't think it's worth it at this point to get a new tune. That's the latest update, thanks again for all the forum member input. DP

Nice looking car!
You didn't tell us you had an aftermarket chip.
SOooooooo many aftrmarket chips are just garbage. Making a shelf tune match an unknown engine combo is impossible. Glad you figured it outt!
Sounds like the prior tune was running rich (exhaust backfires) so you'll probably see better fuel economy now, as well.

Thanks Will, I have had mixed results with aftermarket tunes on other cars owned in the past. Yes it was tuned to run very rich for maximum power on a chassis dyno. I do expect the fuel mileage to improve greatly. I am very glad it was such a simple fix. Now just a few small items left to fix on this red hot rod. DP
