Folks, it just occurred to me: My last Trans Am made this same supercharger sounding whine when the Torque Converter had failed. Car ran and drove fine like that for about 1000 or so miles before it finally popped. So, I'm banking on the problem now being the transmission, even though my stethoscope didn't pick anything up. Opinions on this thought?

Looking at your picture, it appears that the vacuum line you capped goes to the EGR valve. If the EGR valve is stuck in the open position, the vehicle may experience a rough idle or frequently stall. If the valve is not completely stuck open but never closes completely, the engine can "miss" or shudder because of the improper mixture.
