I'd install the ICM's heat sink inside the plastic blown pipe that feeds the alternator with fresh air from the alternator fan in the trunk. Easy and you'll never have a failure due to heat.

Are you referring to the plastic tube in the trunk that supplies air to the two aluminum pipes? Wouldn't that then necessitate the trunk blower being on all the time? Not the route I'd go... especially with an '88 that has no trunk blower.
