No doubt problems can arise with either. I had the belt drill through my battery on my 88 Coupe. It wasn't the belt's fault that the battery shifted into the belt, but any time you have rotating machinery you need to be careful. |

That was your fault for 1: not have the battery hold down working properly 2: not having the battery heat shield in place that would have prevented that. Just saying.

You are half right... the battery heat shield is made of plastic and was chewed through without any difficulty. It will not prevent the battery from being damaged if the hold down is not working properly.

When all else fails on serp belt, I used spray adhesive on crank pulley. It worked. 1988 MERA V6 226,000 MILES, OWNER SINCE NEW 36 YEARS. Drove all but 5 miles.

If you're referring to the serpentine belt on a 2.8... This is the solution.

More importantly than eliminating the squeel (at least to me) is with the auto tensioner, one doesn't have to worry about over tightening the belt and ruining the water pump (or alternator). I always kept my belt a little under tightened just to be safe after a water pump went out due toa mechanic overtightening the belt to stop the squeel..
