I read what Ogre has posted on his page and perhaps I just misunderstood the difference between a vented and non-vented cap. I thought a non-vented cap was like what used to be used on older cars that didn't have any coolant overflow tank at all.
I didn't know some caps with the dime-sized vent valve had small springs acting on this dime-sized disc and some didn't. I thought all caps that had the dime-sized disc were referred to as "vented" caps regardless if they had this spring or not.
In any event, the best thing to do here is probably just use the cap Ogre has listed on his page.
I'm using a Stant Lev-R-Vent cap I had the guy at the auto parts store look up in his computer for my 87 Fiero. Never had a problem with it or the cooling system so there's no reason for me to replace it at this time.

the coolant flows down into the overflow tank. out through the radiator cap, that isn't supposed to be possible, right? I just got a new cap as well...
I had that problem Exactly, and ended up Changing new radiator caps 3 times until I got good one ! "NEW parts" are such Garbage lately !

I have only ever used the stock 3800 thermostat and housing. I can fill coolant quickly and easily by removing the hose from the thermostat housing.
If he is pushing coolant through the cap then its the wrong cap or he doesnt have a functioning water pump.

Mine has always only filled directly to the overflow tank when filling from the modified Fiero thermostat or removing the hose from the neck and filling. 10+ years now and one of the reasons I don't drive the car. Once the engine gets up to temp I hear mini explosions in the coolant pipes under the car.
I have a Champion aluminum rad that came with its own vented cap. I just did an inspection of the cap and it seems fine but I don't know the pressure rating. Hopefully a stock Fiero cap will work on the radiator.

There is a special procedure that must be followed to bleed the cooling system of air. It involves putting in coolant at the thermostat housing and stopping only when coolant pours out the radiator with the cap removed. Put radiator cap back on. Then wait five minutes, fill again. You then put the thermostat housing cap back on and run the engine for a few minutes but not until hot. Open up the thermostat housing and fill again. Finally put the cap back on run the engine to temperature. Let it cool completely, then refill again. Put the cap back on and you should be good to go. If that doesn't do it and assuming the thermostat is good, then do a head gasket leak check
