I'm seeing the ignition module for around $50.....knowing what I know about electronics is "when they go, they go", and these were probably the original coil packs. So, it would be good to swap in a new one.

Thats a good assessment. The ICM's that I've used have gone for over $100. What brand do you find for $50? Like everything else quality of the different ICM's is probably varied. Have used AC Delco but they are priced high. UPDATE: In consulting with a friend that has a large repair shop he advised that the ignition modules below the coil pack can partially go out. He has seen this a few times. This can happen because there are three drivers on the ICM board (one per coil) and if one goes out you'll have a misfire on just a couple of cylinders.

Yeah, the price of the ECMs varies, so yes it makes you wonder about quality, but I have seen them on ebay from $50 up over $100.....but from what I am reading the reviews are all similar in terms of life expectancy.
It makes me wonder if they are applying the silicon grease to aid with heat dissipation. I hear that is important.

Unlike the small ignition module used on the Fiero, I read nothing in the GM manual that says thermal grease under the 3800 Coilpack/ICM is necessary. The module is mounted to a big plate and mounted to the coils so there appears to be a wide direct contact area on the ICM for heat dissipation . Haven't used thermal grease and haven't had any issues. If you read different let us know.
