Axles has little to do w/ engine/trans mount ears but can help if install right. If Mount rubber fails more so as yes, ears limit side loads too in this case.
Engine can be off center for axle loading but w/ OE setup one mount is not in slotted holes or have smaller slots so can't be too out of range.
IOW Axle Tripots can "eat" some engine off center & side loads on top of allowing minor axle length changes as wheels hit bumps etc. Think max is .75-1 inch total before slams sections together or rips the boot or rips out the shaft itself.
