You can go part way - I did a turbo engine for my 88 Gt - it was a 2.8 block but used a 3.1 longer stroke crank and I bored it so that I ended up with 3.2.

I run a full 3.4 with a bunch of headwork and a fair bit of cam for around 200 bhp, in a 2000 lb. British sports car. The manifolding is superor on the 3.4 and it is a good idea to do that unless you really want to make it look like a stock Fiero.

It might sound expensive to start rebuilding a 3.4 to make more power, but when you are looking at doner motors that are 20 years old you might want to consider a rebuild anyway.

3.4 engines are available as rebuilds from most auto parts suppliers, and come with a warranty.

Very few commercial rebuilders offer the 2.8 anymore, chances are if you order one it will be a 3.4.

You may be asked for a VIN for the warranty, if so find a 93-95 Camarobird in the wrecking yard and use it.
Chances are they would accept a Fiero VIN if they do not offer the 2.8.

Overall cost is very close to the same, DIY or commercial.
