IAT & MAT are same thing & does same job just Fiero V6 moved it to air filter house. (& program the ECM for the sensor location & expected air temps...) Most claim 4cyl does not have it by either name because wrong data in code charts etc. 87+ Dukes Do have them.

V6 & engine running the air temp should be about same as air outside. Maybe higher at idle for low air flow like Dukes does.
Engine stops after running air will raise as gets heat soaked by nearly everything then cool off.

If you get one... try to make sure the actual sensor and wires inside is coated. Bare sensors can "rust" faster because of wet air and could take hours to days to dry out in bad weather. Worse if someone wreck or remove the water separator in the left fender.

Tested thru ECM scan engine cold, turn key on do not start the engine and read MAT. should = outside air temp even when scanner is monitor mode and stay there.

I have been calling it MAT and I agree MAT and IAT are the same sensor and engines have one or the other. And yes, I will start calling it an IAT because it is located on the air cleaner and not on the intake manifold (or the plenum - the upper part of the manifold on Fieros, right?). I guess the temperature may read higher if it was on the manifold.
But I noticed that it is very thermally conductive - just holding the sensor body in my hand was enough to see it respond. So, yes, it should read a higher temp if the engine is off but the engine compartment is hot from the engine. That would heat the outer body of the sensor (and read a higher temp) until the engine is started and cooler air is drawn over the thermistor in the sensor.

So, I fixed the IAT wires that the mouse bit through - my repair is very weather proof... still waiting on the stainless steel braid to cover it.
I tested it today and I now get a solid 143 at 74 F (or something around that - I didn't pay attention to value just yet, I just wanted to see how stable it was) over the ALDL.

I found specs on the new IAT that I have and confirmed it by dipping just the thermistor tip (yes, mine is well coated in epoxy and no exposed copper wires) in the freezer, ice water, room air, and boling hot water. I used a digital thermometer right next to the thermistor and let it stabilze 1 minute before taking a reading - this way I got 4 resistance readings from the sensor vs the temperature of the sensor at that moment. They matched pretty close to spec. I did a curve fit from the spec values and found a 5th order polynomial that fits well from -40F up to 155F, after that, the curve becomes more linear to 280F (the air should never be that hot, but until I see how the ECM responds to it (0 to 255) I will assume a wider range for now. So now I have to apply 8 various resistance values from the spec to the IAT connector and see what the ALDL shows for each. I have a precision potentiometer for that. Then I can do another curve fit to get the coefficients so my GUI can display the raw ALDL byte data in very accurate degrees F or C and not just raw ADC values.

I applied the IAT sensor resistor values from the spec to the pins on the IAT connector and correlated them to A/D counts out of the ECM on the ALDL stream.

I got a good curve fit from those readings. There are only 8 sample points in the spec, I wish they speced it at every 10 degrees.
Anyway, I now have the coefficients to convert the raw ADC value to degrees F and C.

I think GM probably did a linear interpolation between the 8 points from the spec. My curve looks more like what I expect from thermistors and such.
So internally the ECM is using a linear interpolation of temperature, but for the human I show a temperature that matches a bit closer to what the IAT is seeing.
They are only off by a few degrees - close enough for the girls I go with.
I am sure the manufacturer rounded out the resistance values in the spec, they are too "perfect" for what thermistors normally produce over temperature. I can attribute that to my Mean Squared Error being above 1.0.
