86 V6 wont fire up (Page 2/2)

By your description, Matthias, it sounds like you have a timing issue after replacing the pick-up coil. Did you pull the distributor to replace it? If so, did you make sure you put it back exactly where it was? Being off one or two "cogs" between the drive gear on the distributor and the cam shaft cam can throw your timing off as will a failing harmonic balancer.

Did you replace the ICM? If it's failing or has failed, the likelihood of starting is pretty slim.

How many miles / kms are on the car? Does it have the original distributor? One of my '86 GTs had a similar problem. Ran fine one day and the next morning it would not start. I replaced the ICM and it started but the idle was rough and acceleration was terrible. After trying everything, I finally replaced the distributor. Problem solved. Examination of the old distributor showed a massive amount of play in the distributor shaft bearings. The gears looked OK but under a magnifying glass you could see some wear. (BTW, if you are replacing the distributor, buy the best you can afford. I used a genuine AC/Delco unit and haven't had any issues.)

Hi Mike,

YES, you hit it. I have replaced the pickup coil and missed the positon of the distributor. I played with it yesterday and it run by setting it on mark of the cramshaft.
I shut it down and installed the timing pistol, since then it did not start again, maby flooded?

It is for sure a timing problem. The distributor is original and no gap, but there are no bearings on it.
I will go on after the weekend.

Hi,

does anybody know how to adjust the distributor position, if you don't know the original position of the distributor?

regards

Fiero is up and running.

Timing was the problem, i did not know that there are several marks on the camshaft wheel.
I took the big gap now, that did it.

Thanks for your great help.
