QUESTION FOR THE ELECTRICAL GURUS ON THE BOARD (Page 2/2)
olejoedad JUN 02, 01:19 PM
There are no fusible links between the battery and the battery cable on the starter.

If your battery is reading 12.2 volts it is not fully charged.

If you do not hear the loud click of the solenoid engaging, your problem could be in the ignition switch box on the top of the steering column, the solenoid itself or the undercharged condition of your battery.

Could be dirty cables on the battery.

Cleaned and recleaned the terminals, the battery (side posts) and the ground lug on the block from the battery.

Will check the battery SOC again....I keep a "battery tender" on it...maybe that's the problem? Coulda fried something somewhere.

Thanks everyone who chimed in.

Still "diagnosing".

So from what olejoedad said, the fusible links condition shouldn't affect the ability of the starter to turn the engine over? Just maybe keep it from starting? One other thing...even if the battery is not "fully charged"...shouldn't it still at least "try" to engage the solenoid, and/or crank the engine over....I mean even a half dead battery, cranks the engine...albeit slowly...till not at all....right?

How olds the batt? It could have volts but has lost all cranking amps. I've noticed that with some of my tended batts

Replaced starter with a known "good one".....cranked the engine over....begrudgingly....swapped out the battery....same deal.

Will be replacing the starter with a new one.......AND the battery!

Will report back, but it may be a while.

Thanks everybody for reading, weighing in and all the help.

New starter cured it.
