Flywheel for 2.8 (Page 2/2)

I believe you can use an internally balance flywheel on an externally balanced engine. I think the problem is the other way.
I have used the Fidanza aluminum flywheel with no issues.
I let my engine builder worry about the balancing...

There are counterbalance weights on the flywheel for a purpose. I wouldn't take a chance with a neutrally balanced flywheel. The crankshaft isn't balanced. That means there's more weight on some of the throes than on others. That sets up vibration. The flywheel weights offset and counterbalance the crankshaft. A weighted flywheel on a neutral balanced crankshaft will create vibrations that can beat the bearings out of the main journals. Same can happen on an unbalanced crank with a neutral balanced flywheel.

@fierofool I sent you a couple of emails about the flywheel you have but your spam filter keeps kicking it back to me.

I had replied to your PM about the weight of the flywheel, so I didn't respond to the same question in email. It came into my inbox. Another response was that I had shipped another to New York State and the shipping was around $16 by UPS regular ground. It may be a little more by now. Here's my reply:

From my PM's

Sorry, I don't. My bathroom scale is broken and I can't weigh it.

Hi, about that flywheel you have, do you know what it weighs? That will help with shipping.

I just had the flywheel weighed. It is 15.8 pounds. I would imagine that by the time I get it packed and boxed, the total would be about 18 to 19 pounds.

I have done this exact thing for my '87GT. I couldn't get the right flywheel (and this was like 10 years ago). I think it was less than $50 back then.

Well, I have a good weighted flywheel that needs no work if anyone needs it. Purchasing a neutral balanced flywheel then having a machine shop weld weights and balance it would probably double the cost.
