88 Fiero 2.5l TBI - Injector access (Page 2/2)

Don't run w/o the screens.

That will allow crap in the injector and never get it out.

try spray injector cleaner.
Not Carb Cleaner.

They do/did make noid for the 700.
If light blinks trying to start then good.

ECM won't run the injector when...
DIS brick is iffy/bad
ECM doesn't get timing data.
ECM is bad even if seems good. Just 1 crack solder joint and ECM can lose 1 section or total dead.

Without the screens for a second isn't going to cause an issue. Just long enough to see it spray is fine.

New ones cost $65 to $130 or more for ACDelco and often not first thing to replace. Could get "Remanufactured" but has a core charge and pay shipping 1 or both ways depending on vendor.

While this Multec injector is hard to kill...

If a Noid light sees ECM "signal" making it to blink but injector nothing then the Injector maybe stuck/plugged from crap fuel. (ECM is on "Ground side" of injector.)
Spray cleaner into the injector side ports and bottom. Wait a bit. Repeat.
Or get some fresh gas and let the injector soak a bit. Use a "shot glass" or other small container so gas only hit the side ports and bottom.

Think Gumout made EFI cleaner spray safer then nearly all Carb Cleaner for TBI cleaning but seems no longer. might still find at some stores.
(Safer for TBI and other EFI parts not you.)
Not sure if Gumout Regane Parts Cleaner/Degreaser replaces that.

Screens are Very fine. Bottom screen can look "warped" in the plastic even when new... But may have a film of crap might wash away w/ fresh gas. Don't scrub them.
example of new unit:

TBI rebuild kits may have new injector screens. (Some only the bottom screen.) Also the regulator part that likes to leak. when you have that leak, may not be very obvious unless air cleaner is open or off when engine runs. Some brands seem to sell same kit as same 1 pic is shown by them.

Hard to see injector output in the car but Drops from injector bottom = o-ring bad etc. and often still drips w/o starting as pump primes.

Contrary to common Myth... Many Main Fuel Filters including Fiero ones often doesn't block small stuff the injector screens can. Worse this has ~ 3 feet of supply line between main filter and TBI that can shed bigger crap w/o warning.
The screens are Final Filters that block All Trash > screen size getting in the injector.
But unlike the main filter, the screens won't show most trash because extra fuel carries that away thru the regulator and return line. Same for most others w/ return flow.

Thank you all so much! A new injector did the trick. The old one was shot - must have seized or something else catastrophic because it didn't do anything even without the screens.

With a new injector, it started up without any starter fluid and is running like a champ.

I really appreciate all of your help! Ogre, your TBI site is fantastic and really helped with troubleshooting.

I forgot to mention that this is the first time the engine has run for at least 5 years, according to the previous owner. I suspect it's been longer than that since the last time it passed Texas Inspection was 2001, and registration would have expired in 2002 or 2003 at the latest.

Thanks again everyone! Now for front and rear suspension work.
