Just wanted to follow up.
Turned out to be a bad master cylinder. With my wife's stethoscope (she's a nurse and no I didn't tell her I used it) I could hear whooshing in the master when pressure was applied. I wouldn't say it stops on a dime but I'm not sure these cars ever did. Thanks to everyone for your help!

MC can be bad but...
Careful, Sound may not mean much, New MC likely have same sound because of quick-takeup or hear air moving in the booster.
bolts thru CA to hold brake hose is easy but some w/ big hands need jacking as said above.

Mostly those only works w/ small to very small things even ignoring clamping/locking "ears." Big things and open the tool to grab gets wrong angles to hold.
"They" make other versions for mechanics etc that hold bigger things. Like...
top works up to 1/4" (Old tool w/o marks easy to see.).
short visegrips to grab ~ 1/2" at the tip.
Can use magnets and magnet tip tools but they have issues/problems too.

My 87 was experiencing a soft pedal and after replacing the calipers, hoses and then bleeding, the pedal still did not feel right. In desperation I finally replaced the 33 year old master cylinder and that did it. If you think about it a MC over 33 years had to be cycled maybe a 100,000 times in its lifespan. They do wear and lose efficiency.
