Shifting just stopped (Page 2/2)

With the shift cable disconnected at the transmission, can you move the lever on the transmission? And can you shift out of 4th gear and into Neutral, and then into 3rd?

NO. When I disconnected the cable and moved the level it just swings up and back. There is no shifting just one sliding movement back and forth. When I move the select portion, there is tension on it.

I slid my finger under that lever arm and I can feel a "notch" and I found a small chunk of metal sitting below on the tranny flat spot. I think this is possibly from under there? I did find someone who had pictures of that bracket at stages torn apart so I can kinda see what it is supposed to look like under there and compare. Today I will be pulling the bolt off that holds the shift lever on and trying to see if that chunk is broken off of something that I can maybe replace or if it is off the case itself. It's not a big chunk, maybe the size of a large pea, but it kinda feels like it is def from under there?

I'll guess that its internal transmission trouble. You may have to drop the box out and have it rebuilt. It is 36 years old has probably made 100,000+ shifts. It wasn't designed to last forever.

Well, I did manage to find some one with some great pictures to help me determine what everything should look like and I started a "mild" disassembly to see if I broke the bracket that holds the shift and select levers. While doing this I found out that at some point the shift lever was tack-welded to the rod going into the transmission, and....it fell out during my disassembly. :-(

So, now I am looking for some one near me that can rebuild my transmission or has a good transmission I can swap out. So depressing!!! Here in Ohio we have had unseasonably warm days lately and I have gotten to enjoy so extra Fiero fun days....that has come to an end because of this unexpected issue.

I know it is a 30 plus year old car, but I really thought if there was an impending issue in the tranny, it would have made noise or been hard to shift or something????? Poor Alice, she is down for the winter a bit early this year.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated as always.
