where can I find local Law/code about working (Page 2/4)

Lou, ask your code enforcement officer to give you a copy of the ordinance you are supposed to be in violation of, otherwise you can't be sure you're in violation and how to compy. If they wrote you a warning or citation, it should be clearly noted on it.

I am pretty well versed in ordinances and especially MuniCode. Tell me what city or county you live in and I'll see what I can find for you.

There are three kinds of men:

1. The ones that learn by reading.
2. The few who learn by observation.
3. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves. Will Rogers

Speaking of zealots, I was looking through Ocala's codes. All cars MUST have a fully functional heating and AC system. All cars MUST have fully functioning interior lights. Seat belts cannot be stained. All dash trim must be intact and in place.

That would prohibit most Fieros from being in the city.

And legal doesn't matter. A gov agency here formed a citizens panel. I attended a meeting with the agency officials overseeing and the citizens panel fully admitted they were sending "blight notices" as a warning to property owners while fully acknowledging those properties didn't fit the city's own definition of blighted. The citizens made the decision to do that and the agency allowed it. Having been invited to join that panel by our councilman I never attended another meeting. Corruption.

Your neighbors are your problem. They have no bottom.

I had my car on stands one day installing an new muffler and tail pipe. No welding, because I couldn't weld. A neighbor reported me to Codes as running a welding shop because he must've assumed I would weld it. The Codes guy was brought up to speed that it was the neighbor next door who complained because I made him pay my vet bill for his animal attacking my pet on my front porch. I also offered him his choice of any welder in my garage when I opened the door, because there wasn't one. Codes is smarter than your neighbors. Another Codes guy called my cell phone to say he got a complaint about something and was suspicious it was another false claim so he called instead of coming out. He was right.

"working on car" might not be the issue. You could be irritating your neighbors with smoke generation, louder than normal sounds, or any unusual smells as a byproduct of working on your car.

When we picked our current house, we did a lot of research on the HOA bylaws, as well as frequent driving around the neighborhoods at several times during the day. I didn't want to be next to a bunch of neighbors who didn't understand and appreciate the value and personal enjoyment of DIY. I didn't want to be around neighbors who would make an issue of my ugly loud Fiero or my frequent garage work. I also do my part in being a good neighbor and 99% of my work is kept in the garage. If I need to start making noise before 9 am, I keep the doors closed until after 9. About the only thing I do in the driveway is the occasional oil change or tire rotation. On any given weekend, it isn't uncommon for me to be doing my metal fab thing, one neighbor have stuff setup in the drive refinishing some furniture and a couple of others doing home projects with quite a bit of cutting with circular saws... I fit right in.

When I was on vacation and needed to pull a transmission at a rental house in Kissammee, FL, I did everything inside the garage with the doors closed (@ 100 degrees) as I knew the neighbors likely would not approve and cause trouble.

no one has yet said ANYTHING to "ME". a neighbor told me he saw county person "nosing around" (parked on the street), asked him what he was doing. said he got a "e mail" complaint that I was running a shop and had a paint booth. I work ONLY on my own cars, do not have a "paint booth" (only lights in the walls) and have Not painted anything in Years! haven't even primed anything as of yet. People are such assholes

Really?

You post all the time asking technical questions about cars you are working on for others. This is just one:

If your neighbors are seeing a lot of different cars coming and going with you working on them, that could be an issue.

If this thing is sitting outside, it will be hard to say you are not doing any paint or body work unless you can present receipts from a body shop for the work done.

Home auto painting here permitted if it's in a true paint booth. Not for profit.
If they can smell solvents it won't matter if you're legal.

With social media networks like Nextdoor Neighbor there's a likelihood of multiple people gossiping. Once the complainer doesn't get the wanted action she/he might be watching for something else so don't get careless.

The childless homosexual across the street from me whines to neighbors about me for my legally parked cars in my driveway (not parked in the street). He gossips to my nextdoor neighbor who has 2 code violations: a boat trailer in his front yard. a 2nd gravel driveway.
