I'm curious how you "lubed" these components?

Are you sure it's not the fuel pump you're hearing?

By "lubed", I mean I sprayed a little lubricant around the back of the pulleys and shafts of these parts, hoping maybe if they were making the whining it would stop if some lube got drawn up the shaft and into the bearings, at least long enough to pinpoint the culprit. If this sounds like quackery, don't kill me, that was my Dad's suggestion.

I don't think it's the fuel pump, seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine, and only starts whining after the car is running for a minute or two.

Thanks for your quick response Patrick!

Tell your dad to put down the WD-40 and return to the television.

Years ago I bought a non-running '84 Fiero, and when I got it going, there was a definite whine coming from the front of the engine. Took awhile to finally trace where it was coming from. Turned out the timing cover had a small indentation in it, and it was slightly rubbing against the timing gear. Quite a nuisance to fix!

Oh good lord would that ever suck. You'd think it would do it all the time though, not just a minute or two after the car is running. I'll see if I can't find a way to snake my stethoscope down to around the gear area and have a listen!

I'm not suggesting that's what your noise is. That was just something that I had "fun" with years ago.

When you're using your stethoscope, I hope you're using the rod attachment, and not the cone. I found that placing the rod on various engine locations proved to be much more helpful than pointing the cone here and there. Just be careful when close to moving components!

Sure am Patrick! Mine actually didn't even come with the cone, just the rod. Another thought is maybe the transmission pump, the fluid is very not-good in there, not burnt but it's bright orange and does not smell too good, like maybe it got diluted. I'd assume the whining should go away when in neutral though, and it did not.

Shame I have this ghost to chase, other than this and the rich condition, the engine sounds great. Revs out real nice, I don't hear any missing or hesitation at all.

If anyone would like to give it a listen, I do have a video up on the "Fiero" group on Facebook

I hate trying to find anything on Facebook. It's useless for anything that's more than an hour old.

If you upload your video to YouTube, you can embed the video right in your post here.

Might as well, give me a moment and I'll do that! Thanks for all the help so far Patrick, I do appreciate it!
