Front coolant tank (Page 2/4)

Well, my system has none of the problems or symptoms theorgre mentioned and works great. So OP, good luck in your decision as to what you do.

Thanx for the insight, guys. For the time being, I have it plugged, but I think I will get a small aftermarket tank just for the extra breathing. Something like this:

Between the hood and headlight mods, there isn't room for the stock tank, and I found a huge crack in it the other day, hense why I asked the question.

take care everyone,

Bob

A bit late to the party, but I installed a 20 # non-vented cap on my radiator, and blocked off the overflow port.
I installed a fill adapter with an overflow in the rear, with a 16 # cap. Mounted the overflow bottle where the air filter canister used to reside.
Works perfectly.

Don't worry, somebody will be along shortly to tell you that you are wrong and that this is not possible.

I like the looks of that tank. Reviews are hit and miss but considering replacing my Dorman universal plastic one with this.

Not sure if that's what I'll use, but it's an example.

Raydar... Nice....

One has to ask why Pontiac only used the front expansion tank when designing the car.

Looks like an oil catch can.

I'm convinced that the best place for the overflow tank is in the front . Its a downhill location and is designed to keep air from entering the radiator . This is not to say that an overflow tank in the rear compartment won't work but I'll stay with the automotive companies design on this one. The only place for the overflow tank on my swaps would be in the space for the air cleaner box and that would mean giving up the CAI intake system that I believe is critical. You always want cooler outside air entering the engine for the best performance.
As for overflow tanks up front; there are not too many aftermarket units that will fit in the limited space there.

Dennis, you are correct, with the exception of one part.

The front mounted recovery tank prevents air from building up in the radiator.

The top of the radiator is purposely designed as an air trap for the cooling system, in combination with the partially filled and vented recovery tank, the radiator cap will burp air into the recovery tank upon heating up, and draw in coolant when cooling down, eliminating any air from the system.

Edited - replaced 'expansion' with 'recovery'
